We recently published a new journal paper from Applied Acoustics authored by the members of the CAL (Justine Hui and Yusuke Hioka) with our collaborators. The paper studied how different types of masking sound (a noise that is designed to hide confidential/private information in sound) affect speech intelligibility and annoyance of listeners with different language backgrounds. The results clearly show that non-native listeners are severely affected by noise regardless of their proficiency suggesting that we should be more aware of the detrimental effect of noise in the current multilingual society. Please have a look at the paper for more details about the study. The link to the paper is here.
